Four Tips for Battery Safety

Do you know what you need to know about car battery safety? The basics, like not smoking around your car’s battery, are common sense, but there are other tips that Professional Automotive Services wants to make sure you know.

Never Reverse Battery Polarity

Your car’s battery is meant to go into the car one way. You should probably not be taking your car’s battery out anyway, but never try to reverse the battery’s polarity. Hooking the negative pole to the positive cable is incredibly dangerous and can cause the battery to explode. If you’re not sure how exactly to hook the battery up, never try to do it on your own.

Make Sure New Batteries Are Fully Charged

If you install a new battery into your car on your own, you have to make sure that it’s fully charged before you drive the car. The reason for this is that it can cause strain on the alternator and the rest of the electrical system if the battery isn’t fully charged. That defeats the purpose of having installed the new battery in the first place and is an unnecessary drain on the car.

Don’t Jump Start a Frozen Battery

Car batteries can actually freeze, and that’s one thing that can kill the charge in your car’s battery. If your car’s battery is frozen, never try to jump-start it. That can cause serious issues and won’t get your car started. You’ll have to warm up the battery before it can be tested or charged, and that’s going to take time.

Get Your Battery Tested if You’re Noticing Any Problems

If you’re noticing anything odd at all about how your car is running or how the electrical system is operating, it might be a good idea to get your car’s battery tested. So many different parts of your car are affected by the battery, and testing is going to give you information about what’s happening with the battery. That way if you do need to charge the battery or replace it, you’ll know.
